Got It, Don't Flaunt It

“Think about it this way: If a person buys a monogrammed Gucci handbag, or diamond earrings shaped like Chanel's double Cs, everyone knows where she made the purchase. If, instead, she chooses one of Bottega Veneta's braided satchels, or a handbag from Proenza Schouler's new line--which has no visual branding--she doesn't look like she's showing off.”

I'm always amazed by the need of some people to have designer stuff. Yes, need. For some, it is a must to be in possession of certain brands, even when the design is not great or the use is impractical.

I realise that there are only a handful of women working in the same building as me carry LV or Gucci handbags. In fact, on my floor, there could probably be one or two ladies. None of my MDs carry them. Not that they can’t afford one. On average, most of them have at least two to three homes around UK and a holiday home either near the beach or ski spots in Europe.

Yet, I must admit they have fine taste when it comes to handbag. Their collections are stylish and classy, with no obvious brand. For all I know, it could be the Birkin.

Apparently the sales of glaring designs have fallen in Europe and US. Some are cutting down their work force and closing down their factories due to lack of demand. During tough times, the last thing you want is to attract unnecessary attention. Probably it makes little difference in this country as jobless are entitled to dole. However, I doubt it is the same back home. A friend who called me today said that she has become more vigilant each time she goes out and about. She even changed her handbag to a less known brand to minimise risk.

Despite the recession, some people remain unchanged and continue to buy. Perhaps it is good that they are playing their role to the economy by spending but seriously, how many designer handbags does a person need in a year? Like an article I read in Forbes today, instead of buying 10 obvious brand handbags, why not getting one limited edition bag equivalent to the price of 10. Usually the value of these bags increases over time.

Or why not just follow Warren Buffet’s philosophy? He still lives in the old house which he purchased 50 years ago when his net worth stands at USD62 billion as reported in 2008.

Oh well, if you have the means to buy, then why not? Only that, I find it very amusing when these people make a huge noise upon knowing the meal costs at decent Malaysian cafes in London or insist that their kids should get scholarship or loan to pursue their studies. If you can buy handbags worth hundreds or thousands of sterling, surely you can afford those mentioned.

Unless of course, they were charged to cards or worse, fake goods.

Yeah I dont think I could ever buy those expensive handbags without feeling guilty about it later on...I mean if it's a bday or anniversary gift then thts another story la..hehehe...In any case I would rather pay RM4K to go on a holiday than buy a designer bag...that's just me :)

People who go for branded items just have problems with their personality and esteem, if I may say so. Surely, if one can afford, then by all means - splurge. HeHe... But it's not really good practice, is it? As long as it's nice, that's all that matters.

Inah,

My casual handbag is an Esprit sling bag! *grins* I can fit everything inside, mini B's game, water bottle, snacks, umbrella. *lol*

It is ok to get nice things and it doesnt hv to be high end items. My friend's Vinnci shoes were mistaken to be on sale at Harrods by another customer while she was trying others. She could probably make a huge profit if she offered it to her. *lol*

CG,

I'm sure for some of us, treating others or ourselves on special occasions are the norm. Sometimes after getting a huge pay check and allocating part of it to reward ourselves is reasonable too.

But....if you buy expensive stuff when you are in huge debt, or complain abt £10 meal, or making a fuss to get a loan or scholarship for your kids when it can be made available for those who need it more; there must be something wrong in the picture.

D,

Some of my friends are so down to earth despite hvng 6 to 7 figures in their bank account. They love nice stuff but I hardly see them parading the 'brands'.

And I agree with you. At times I feel some people splurge simply because they feel their life is incomplete without them. Brand may reflect elegance and style but only if we know how to flaunt them, which unfortunately not many do.

as a friend always says, money cant buy style. *grins*

Hi,
I'm not tied to any brands in particular nor branded items per se. If I really feel I need it, I like it and I can afford it then I'll buy it.
I cringe on behalf of people who flaunt items with gaudy bling bling factor. It is too obvious and it is too embarassing.
For me, biarlah sederhana selalu.
Have a nice weekend!

Hi Ms B,

I go for balance in my purchases. If I decided to get something nice, something else will have to give.

I think it is about how we put things together & it is really not about the price.

I like Warren Buffet’s philosophy. Much to be learned from that tycoon.

Keep well sweetheart & lil Ms B too. Hugs.

hey there!

i'm baaaaaaaaaaacccckkkkkkkkk!!!! *LOL*

I tell you.... you SHOULD join me & momster... we went crazy over there... just imagine 5 crazy adults shopping *LOL* (yup our husbands went crazy as well)

btw, i love designer stuff, the only thing is i can't afford them... hehehe...

so, i opted for alternatives la... i'm not into fakes (but that doesn't mean I have never purchased them before) but for handbags, i prefer the non-branded ones or if they're branded (cap ayam is also considered a 'brand' kan?) hehehe, i'll make sure they don't 'scream' their names all over the bag hehehehe

in the end, all that matters is your preference... splurge if u can afford to do so, but NOT to please others :-) no no no... *wink*

Hi Naz,

I'm so outdated when it comes to bling bling. It's all about comfort for me and because of that, I tend to stick to a few brands. The bonus point is that these shops usually have seasonal sales.

Simplicity is preferred for some of us, eh? (or actually, lazy to make the effort. *grins*)

Ruby dear,

I'm a fan of WB! I'm amazed how his mind works as well as his simplicity approach.

You are right about how we put things together. SOme of my colleagues wonder about my suits of which by the way purchased when I was still back home. Yup! It still looks good.

U keep well too! The lil one was upset upon learning that I have to travel this week.

n.i. dear,

I can just imagine how crazy you went! *LOL* I've heard so much about bandung. I suppose it is similar to us when we go to factory outlets here.

There are too many designer brands here but my personal preference has always been italian. Fortunately, there arent many or limited range, unlike the typical brands.

I believe if we carry ourselves well, it doesnt matter what brand (or brandless) the item is. *winks* Hey, some of my suits were bought when I was working back home and they still look awesome. They were much cheaper than Zara/MNG etc.

Hi u,
Dunno how does current economy turmoil effecting you guys in the UK, here in Dubai, well, people still spend as usual. And loads and loads of homosapien cluthcin those LV, Loewe, Gucci and whatnot.

For me, I have the NEED to have Harley Davidson... hahahaha, it is a need, not a practical one, but it is indeed a need.

Anonymous said...

here in msia, even if you have an original LV, people will look at you from top to toe, wondering whether it is original or fake. moral of the story, dont waste money coz ppl will still think it is a fake!!

Hi Ms.B,
I've come across several designer bags I want to buy (but yes, same like you, I prefer those that doesn't scream the brand names), but I always feel guilty wanting to spend so much on a bag, when the amount spent could mean a whole year's supply of food for some families...

but of course, if splurging once in a while and able to use it for a lifetime, why not, rite?

i just don't get why people need to buy them like, every week? (from some of the blogs i read.. hehe..):D

Ms B said...

HI aporn,

People are definitely spending less than before. I think it is common sense as there is no guarantee that we have a job tomorrow.

*LOL* Harley eh? Why not? Get your present bike a new friend. *grins*

Ms B said...

HI anon,

I think it is a personal choice to use whatever brand. It is for our own satisfaction to have original bags. As long as our conscious is clear that we do it because we want to and we have the means to grab one.

Ms B said...

momster,

exactly my sentiment!!! Like, every week??? My sifus who have the means to get them on weekly basis dont have that attitude towards spending.

I think once we have dependents, probably our approach towards spending changes. Guilt will always kick in. Yet, we should once in awhile treat ourselves.
