Our heroes

Proud to see the second person in the slide show is Syed Mokhtar and Zaid Ibrahim is featured separately.

SM: Foundation funds remedial classes in English, science and math for 20,000 underachieving students from poor rural families each year. Hopes the extra schoolwork "will help bridge the educational divide between the rich and poor."

ZI: Champion of unpopular causes.
Zaid also has been a vocal critic of Malaysia's race-based political landscape, which has enshrined the divisions between the country's three main ethnic groups: the majority Malays, the Chinese and the Indians. "We have superficial unity," he says. "It has bred enmity. I think we need to start over." Talk like that has made Zaid an inspiration for Malaysians who wish to see the country transcend its ethnic divides.
Internal critiques of UMNO such as Zaid's are not customary. Big names who have strayed from the party line have been ignominiously ousted, even jailed. The UMNO disciplinary board felt that Zaid had offended it in 2005 and handed down a punishment. Then last month UMNO dropped him from its list of candidates in the Mar. 8 elections. But this is hardly slowing him down. "At the end of the day fear will not succeed," he says.

Hi Ms Istanbul, to gostan back your 'mini skirt' posting, wa...London having balmy weather?
Kita sini, we've been having -30'c, yes, -30'c to -18'c temp, and the snow outside now like icebergs.
Some people parked their cars outside gone for holidays, now da balek, they can't get into their cars, totally encased in a big blog of ice. Can't even chip off unless they want to damage their cars. Duduk bas, ha ha.
Outside every house there's about 4 to 5 feet of ice covered snow, as people shoveled it from their driveway. Right now its all ice outside, my windows all iced up.
Oh well, lagi one month Spring time. Da lupa the colour of grass, ha ha.

Hi Lee,

Fortunately its not as freezing as your place. I've been watching this series, Ice Road Truckers. I think its about truckers in Canada. Delivering goods on thick ice! They make USD1k per day. High risk, high return.

Ehem, about vote. I think it is mentioned somewhere, in the newspapers and blogs, that only students and "kakitangan kerajaan" who are allowed to use postal votes. So professional people like me, who pays our scholarship loans unlike others, are not entitled to such rights. Hmm, I wonder why......

U keep well too!

Fizzy dear,

I too admire their spirits and efforts. Rare breed these days.
